PMIWDC

Message from the Chapter Chair - December eNewsletter

First of all – I hope you enjoy a joyous holiday season!  This is a great time of year to reflect back on what and who we are thankful for, and to plan and prepare for the year ahead.  All of us on the Board of PMIWDC are grateful for your involvement in the chapter and support for all the various initiatives the chapter sponsors.  Thank you!

I also want to take this opportunity to look back on what PMIWDC has accomplished in 2011 during my tenure as Chair (President).  The mission of PMIWDC has remained the same for a number of years, and it is: To Serve Our Members and Promote Exceptional Project Management.  The theme for the year has been: Strategic & Operational Alignment.  This has meant that Chapter activities should reinforce and optimize the mission in current activities, as well as looking to extend it in new areas of focus.  The chapter is in a strong economic position and has an abundance of capable and committed volunteers willing to devote time and energy to serve you, PMIWDC’s members.

Here is what we (all of us – volunteers) accomplished in 2011 in NEW initiatives, on top of the already-existing activities:

  • Passed 10,000 Members!
  • Added new Local Communities: Reston Luncheon, Navy Federal Credit Union Luncheon, Department of Justice Luncheon, Dept. of Labor Luncheon, 2nd Tysons Luncheon
  • Outreach: Focus on “Promoting the Profession” in numerous ways - Chapter to Chapter agreements with UVA & hosted a PM Conference at UVA; building relationships with Bowie State University & University of DC; continued support of Fairfax County's Educating Youth through Employment (EYE) Program; Successful pilot of PMI partnership with Society for Science and the Public to match PMIWDC mentor volunteers with Washington, select DC high school science teachers are using PMI principles in the design of science curricula and research activities for their students; connecting with PMI Global Operations Center (GOC) Global Executive Council to leverage their involvement with the Washington DC area.
  • Networking Programs: Notable Dinner Speakers, including: the project manager for the 2008 Ryder Cup (Tara Guenther) in January, the project manager for the Washington Metro expansion (Pat Nowakowski) in April, and the former GAO comptroller general (David Walker) in July.
  • Membership: Ran a highly successful Career Day; hosted six “PM After Hours” Social Networking Events; introduced "VP Spotlight" at the Meet & Greet prior to dinner meetings - highlighting a different VP each month
  • Marketing: Developed three new sponsorship packages aimed at small businesses; hosted “Wounded Warriors” at annual PMIWDC Golf Tournament
  • Finance: Revamped financial monthly reporting; Developed and adopted Chapter Investment Policy, thereby completing action on recommendation of Independent Auditor
  • Governance: Drafted and adopted Board policies on Conflict of Interest, Ethics, Whistleblower, and Confidentiality; maintained continuity of Governance Board amid personnel changes; began “Message from the Chair” letters in monthly newsletters

Thank you again for your membership in our strong and vibrant Chapter!  We invite you to engage with us to help steer the chapter’s course to even greater achievements ahead.
