The ability to bounce back from adversity and misfortune is a critical attribute of successful individuals, successful teams and high performance organizations. Some people are able to overcome the most horrific personal tragedies and succeed against overwhelming odds. Others are devastated by relatively minor occurrences and never regain their composure.
One company will weather the storm of disaster and emerge stronger than ever while another firm, faced with the same challenges, will fail. A successful project team that experiences a serious set-back will get back on track quickly while less successful teams will flounder. How is it that some individuals and teams are able to survive hardships and others are not? The reasons can be summarized in one word – resilience.
This presentation offers an engaging - sometimes humorous, sometimes frightening – and practical approach for understanding and developing this essential attribute. It will introduce you to a model for building your own level of resilience and the ability of your team to bounce back from tough times. Understanding – and applying – this model will help project managers successfully lead their project teams through the inevitable, often frustrating events they will encounter.
To demonstrate the importance of resilience, the presentation will also feature the inspiring story of Joe Williams, who was attacked by a grizzly bear while taking an evening hike through Glacier National Park. During a terrifying forty-five minute continuous battle, he drew upon his innate resilience to survive. In the years since that attack he has continued to develop and enhance the skills that are critical to achieving individual and organizational resilience in the face of any crisis.
